Mary Kumar - Painter
Mary Kumar holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and a Masters degree in Biblical Exposition and Sacred Music. Art was one of her greatest childhood preoccupations. Mary lost her desire to create art after high school; however, ironically, she continued to attract and befriend artists throughout her college and postgraduate years. In some sense, she lived vicariously through these vibrant artists with whom she shared community.

When did you know you wanted to be an artist?
I drew constantly as a child. From elementary school through high school, people would ask me to draw for them. I wanted to make things often too and I exhibited the all the traits of a creative child.
How does your personal story/background influence your work?
It’s been a creative explosion in the past few years. Individual healing has allowed me to create again. And likewise, art has been healing for me and for those who have experienced this journey with me.
Which of your works are you most proud of?
My most favorite project was painted on a 5 x 7 plank of donated plywood for the local event “Lynchburg Prays” at E.C. Glass this March.
Note that it even has some three dimensional aspects to it!
What is the hardest part about being a professional artist?
Although I would rather only create, the business side of art is equally necessary. But it can be hard. Annual events such as “Create Lynchburg” that have seminars to assist creative entrepreneurs are so helpful to artists like me.
Who are other artists that inspire you?
I follow a variety of artists: bakers, chefs, photographers, fashion bloggers, illustrators, musicians, makeup and hair stylists, writers, interior designers, and so forth. It’s all creativity and they keep me inspired. I love the community that social media has given artists.
