Artist Profile: Ella Morrison - Illustrator and Designer
My name is Ella Morrison and I am a Filipino American multimedia designer based in Central Virginia. I collaborate with a wide range of clients on projects such as illustrative portraits, merchandise design, and digital marketing but I also just love to doodle out of sheer enjoyment. My art expresses themes of youth, self identity, femininity, and love. In my free time I am a musician and avid hobby collector. I love matcha lattes, cute stickers, 90’s shoujo manga, Sylvanian Families, deliciously long naps, and cats.

WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE AN ARTIST?
I have wanted to be an artist since I was but a wee child with a stubby crayon in my little dumpling fist.
HOW DOES YOUR PERSONAL STORY/BACKGROUND INFLUENCE YOUR WORK?
I am a first generation Filipino American woman, so my perspective of the world has been greatly challenged by the competing cultures that raised me. When I realized that art can create a safe space for me to express myself despite my mental and physical health, I was in for the long haul.
WHICH OF YOUR WORKS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?
I am most proud of my piece “Cosmic Kiss” because not only is it super cute, it is the piece that convinced me to believe in myself and pursue art even more.
WHAT IS THE HARDEST PART ABOUT BEING A PROFESSIONAL ARTIST?
Maintaining confidence in my abilities and finding the time to make things outside of my 9-5.
WHO ARE OTHER ARTISTS THAT INSPIRE YOU?
Naoko Takeuchi, Moto Hagio, Junji Ito, Rachel Smythe, Rebecca Sugar
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUNG OR ASPIRING ARTISTS?
Be true to yourself and you’ll always be happy.
