Heather King - Novelist
Heather Elizabeth King is the author of paranormal mysteries and paranormal romance. She has been a story teller for most of her life. Some of her favorite memories are of telling stories to her girlfriends at slumber parties when she was a pre-teen. Heather is also a recipient of numerous book review awards, including:

When did you know you wanted to be an artist?
I’ve never not known. For as long as I can remember I’ve been in love with the arts; music and literature in particular. The revelation for me was that I could actually make a living at it.
How does your personal story/background influence your work?
My mom is a lover of the arts. Growing up on Long Island in New York there were many opportunities for her to expose all of her daughters to music, books, paintings and theatre. From monthly trips to the library, to music always playing in our house, and the occasional play on Broadway, she saturated us in the arts. It was always something that was present in my life so it felt natural for me to develop such an interest in it. I also have five older sisters and they all love horror movies. Even though I wasn’t supposed to, by the time I was ten I’d seen all sorts of scary movies. So the books I write are a mix of all of that.
Which of your works are you most proud of?
““Under the bed,” I whispered, pointing to the bed with my cell.
It didn’t take long to maneuver beneath it. Nora was at my right, Kate at my left
“Okay, let’s do this,” Nora said, once we were settled.
Then, of course, nothing happened.
We lay beneath the bed, staring into the dark. It was hard not to see imaginary figures out there in the hall. Tina back from the morgue to attack me. Some new and not wholly unexpected terror come to kill us. A few times I even envisioned the creatures I’d seen take Joe away. They burst from the hallway floor, only this time to drag me away.
Maybe this hadn’t been a good idea.”
I’m really proud of all of my paranormal novels. I love writing mysteries. There’s so much you can do in a mystery. Add the paranormal element and the possible stories you can tell are endless!
What is the hardest part about being a professional artist?
Promo. Definitely promo.

What advice would you give aspiring artists who come from minority or under-represented groups?
To believe in yourself. You can achieve anything in life, but the first step is believing that you can.
