Geral ("Gerry") Butler
Geral Butler is pursuing her passion for painting full time since retiring from a 31 year career as an art teacher in Lynchburg, VA, Rowland Heights, California and in Rustburg, VA. After receiving her BA Degree from Temple University, Philadelphia, PA., she has continued honing her skill and style by continuing to take many workshops, classes and studying with Ron Boehmer, a renowned Plein Air Painter in this region.
Her paintings have been exhibited at the following places: The Lynchburg Art Club, Academy of Fine Arts, Lynchburg College, Bedford City Library, Sweet Briar College, The Lodge of the Fishermen (Common Ground), Riverviews, Harrison Museum in Roanoke, VA. Centra Health Cancer Center, Africa House and many restaurants in Lynchburg area. Affiliations include membership in Am. Pen Women, Board LAC, Academy of Fine Arts and E.C. Glass Art Collection Committee.

When did you know you wanted to be an artist?
In 1948 when Geral was five years old,she won a State contest for a self portrait using Crayola Crayons. Drawing was just something she grew up doing.
How does your personal story influence your work?
The years at the Tyler School of Art at Temple University opened her eyes to all the possibilities in her field and created the passion for painting which is still present.
Which of your works are you most proud of?
Since Geral retired in 1999, she has amassed series of paintings,for example: There are paintings of people on the streets of New York City, tea cups, personal travels in the Mediterranean, France and travels by friends to Ethiopia, VA landscapes and many more. She may have a favorite at the time of a series, but it changes as she progresses.
What is the hardest part about being a professional artist?
The hardest part is maintaining the discipline to paint every day.

What advice would you give aspiring artists who come from minority or under-represented groups?
Geral’s advice would be to paint, paint paint! Follow your passion and put in the work!
